Final Presentation!

Welcome to my interpretive
Poem of this class.
I hope that listening is
Quite a blast!

We started out disputing
Whether certain words exist
In case you’re feeling curious
I shall present you a list:

Literature and civilization,
Those definitions we did bury,
And then there was this other “word”..
I think it rhymed with Sperry.

Then drudged through Morreall
Which was boring at best,
His theories sure

Put our minds to the test.

For a writer on comedy
He’s a serious bloke,
Whatever would we have done
Without Dr. W’s spark notes?

We learned the theory of superiority
The first of a few,
Where you laugh at others
Because it’s them, and not you.

Next comes incongruity
Where you laugh out of surprise
Because the thing you least expected
Jumps before your eyes.

The relief theory
Is what we learned last.
Here, laughter is the place
Excess stress is cast.

And gosh we sure learned them
To Dr. Williams’ dismay,
Because we found a way to reference them
Every. Single. Day.

Reading Vorhaus was
A much simpler task.
The humor in his explanations
Made them easier to grasp.

He taught us that comedy
Is truth and pain,
And the comedic gap
Is where humor will reign.

The rule of nine
Can be really fun.
I wrote nine poems
Before I picked this one.

We practiced some writing
Just like John said,
And we focused on process
Not the product at the end.

A comedy about honesty
Is what came next,
The Importance of Being Ernest
Was the name of the text.

By not telling the truth
The men who Bunburied
Ended up feeling
Rather worried.

We learned that humor
Is not always great
It can put people
Into an upset state.

It can be racist and
It can be crude
And some jokes are just
Downright rude.

I never thought about
How much jokes can hurt.
From now on I'll try
To be more alert.

I had no idea and
It surprised me so
That humor differs so much
With each place you go.

We learned a fake religion
Which was kind of neat
Until they started doing
Dirty things with their feet.

We encountered some gentlemen
With their heads in the clouds
Silently regretting
Their marriage vows

I got a conversation partner
From a far off place
And our talks truly
Put a smile on my face.

I learned so much
From this sweet woman
I will never forget
Dear miss Bayan.

Anguished English was fun,
I love me some grammar.
Some people use it
In a really odd manner.

I've developed this fear
of really long words.
Some of those quizzes
were a little absurd.

hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia

I learned something new
About everyone here.
And y’all learned that my awkwardness
Is pretty severe.

We had lots of fun,
We shared some good laughs.
We saw some comedic
Photographs.
I wish y'all the best
in your future endeavors.
Maybe after this class
We'll all be a bit more clever.

Well, it has come time
That I bid you adieu.
I’m so happy I chose to take
Lit & Civ II.

  1. This was one of my favorite presentations. You did a great job on this and made us all look bad! The writing was concise, but funny. The pictures and gifs were extremely clever. This was a great way to show what you've learned without using a powerpoint presentation. I know you enjoyed writing this and you should be proud of the end result. You are an excellent writer and poet. We have all learned a ton in this class and it was hard to put it all into words in a reasonably concise way. You killed it, nice job!
